What is Minimum Liability Car Insurance
In most states, all drivers must carry the state defined minimum liability insurance. These state minimum requirements can be found at the state insurance commissioner’s website.
Liability car insurance only pays for bodily injuries or property damage suffered by others when you are at fault in an accident. Your own injuries or property damage are not covered through liability insurance.
Pros: Minimum liability insurance can be combined with an SR22 filing or FR44 filing. It is often the cheapest auto insurance you can purchase.
Cons: If you’re in a serious accident, a minimum liability insurance policy will generally not provide the coverage you need.
Types of Liability Coverage
Bodily injury liability: pays for injuries suffered by others in an accident you caused.
Property damage liability: pays for damage you cause to another person’s property (typically their vehicle) in an accident.
Wisconsin Example – 25/50/10
Wisconsin’s minimum liability of 25/50/10 means coverage up to:
- $25,000 per individual injured
- $50,000 for all persons injured
- $10,000 coverage for property damage
